Overcome Doubts and Increase Rewards: Prayer
Deep, sincere personal prayer is crucial to our faith and will help us overcome the adversity that threatens our faith. Prayer is action, and thus faith is put into action. The Prophet Joseph Smith is a well-known example of someone who exercised his faith through prayer.
He was 14 years old when he began actively using the fundamentals of believing, wanting, and studying to improve his faith and conquer his disbelief. A desire to pray came over him as he read from the book of James, chapter 1, verses 5 and 6. The same is true for us as we pray, “…Lord, enhance my faith and help thy unbelief.”
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask God, who gives freely to all men and does not condemn; and it shall be given to him. But he must ask in trust, without reservation. He who wavers is like a wave of the sea shaken by the wind (James 1:5-6).
Standing before you this afternoon is a humbling privilege and experience. I’m overwhelmed with the duty of conveying a blessed message that will both enlighten and lift. I ask the Holy Spirit to influence our hearts and brains as we go over the fundamental and first truth of the gospel.
I also invite you to bring a pencil and paper to take notes and capture any impressions that come to mind during our time together. Today, I’d like to offer my ideas and impressions on the faith concept.
My message is founded on two biblical references.
The first mention appears in Luke 17 (p. 1308), and the second in Mark 9. (p. 1257). Jesus taught his disciples through precepts and parables in Luke 17 and the preceding chapters.
He spoke of crucial character traits, or “faith seeds,” required to form faithful followers and aspirants for God’s Kingdom. As they listened, the apostles acknowledged their flaws – their lack of trust – and reacted to the Savior in verse 5: “…Lord, boost our faith.”
Boost our faith
In the ninth chapter of Mark (page 1257), a father trying to care for his son possessed by an “evil spirit” asked the Savior to heal the youngster. We find the The promise to all in verse 23. “If thou canst believe,” the Savior said, “all things are possible to him who believeth.” In verse 24, the father responds, “…Lord, I believe; aid thou my unbelief” (emphasis added).
These two expressions, “Lord, enhance our faith” and “Lord, I believe; aid thou my unbelief.” Both are especially pertinent for every one of us as we gather experience in this laboratory of applied faith known as mortality. Indeed, let us pray, “Lord, boost my faith and aid thy unbelief.”
So much is dependent on our personal faith. read more
